Our Origin

As a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company, we are proud members of the MS&AD Group, headquartered in Tokyo. This affiliation enables us to exchange expertise with experienced colleagues worldwide, ensuring financial stability and the ability to provide comprehensive insurance protection to our customers across the globe.

With a growing presence across Europe and deep-rooted connections in Asia, we offer our clients access to a well-established and expansive international network. As part of our continued growth, we have successfully merged MSIG Insurance Europe AG and MS Amlin Insurance SE, becoming MSIG Europe SE. Further strengthening our position in the market and enhancing our ability to serve customers with even greater expertise and efficiency.

Our journey has been shaped by a legacy of growth, innovation, and commitment to excellence – here’s a look at our milestones over the years.

  • 2025 MSIG Europe AG and MS Amlin Insurance SE merge as equals

    Forming MSIG Europe SE, creating a stronger and more unified European insurance entity.

  • 2023, MS Amlin Marine NV became a 90% subsidiary of MS Amlin Insurance

    Strengthening its position in the marine insurance sector.

  • 2019 MS Amlin Insurance relocated its headquarters

    From London to Brussels, ensuring continued access to the European market following Brexit.

  • 2016 MS&AD acquires Amlin plc to form MS Amlin

    This resulted in the creation of MS Amlin Insurance (MS AISE), expanding its global insurance and reinsurance operations.

  • 2014 Transfer of the portfolio

    The portfolio of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company (Europe) Limited was transferred to MSIG Insurance, streamlining operations and strengthening MS&AD’s presence in the European market.

  • 2012 Establishment of MSIG Insurance Europe AG (MSIGEU)

    With its headquarters in Cologne, Germany, expanding MS&AD’s presence in the European insurance market.

  • 2001 Creation of MS&AD

    Formed through the merger of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance, Aioi Insurance, and Nissay Dowa Insurance, creating one of Japan’s largest insurance companies.

  • 1918 House of Mitsui

    Established Mitsui Marine Insurance, enhancing its financial services by providing risk management and insurance solutions.

  • 1893 House of Sumitomo

    Established Sumitomo Marine Insurance, strengthening its business by providing financial security and risk management for its enterprises.

  • 1876 House of Mutsui

    The House of Mitsui pioneered Japan’s financial sector by establishing the country’s first private bank. It later expanded into trading and shipping, laying the groundwork for the Mitsui Group’s diverse business empire.

  • 1691 House of Sumitomo

    The Besshi Copper Mine was the Sumitomo family’s first mining venture, becoming the foundation of their business empire. Over time, it expanded into forestry and machinery, supporting Sumitomo’s growth into a major industrial group.

  • 1673 House of Mitsui

    The Echigoya Kimono Shop was the foundation of the Mitsui business empire. It revolutionised retail with innovative practices, including cash sales at fixed prices (instead of bargaining) and in-store sales (rather than door-to-door selling).

    These methods made shopping more transparent and efficient, shaping modern Japanese retail.

  • 1622 House of Mitsui

    Takatoshi Mitsui was the founder of the Mitsui Group, one of Japan’s largest business conglomerates. His teachings and business principles were recorded in “Sochiku Isho”, a document that provided ethical and practical guidance for Mitsui merchants. His wisdom and business philosophy were preserved in “Sochiku Isho” to guide future generations.

  • 1590 House of Sumitomo

    Izumiya was the Sumitomo family’s original business, specialising in copper refining and smithing. Its success was strengthened by Riemon Soga, who introduced innovative copper-processing technology, laying the foundation for Sumitomo’s growth in the metal industry.

  • 1585 House of Sumitomo

    Masatomo Sumitomo’s “Founder’s Precepts” offer ethical and business guidance for merchants, emphasising integrity, trust, and long-term success. These core principles shaped the Group’s values and lasting influence.
